Lion’s Share

for each stolen breath

Ripped from my chest

by the piercing, stabbing pangs

in agony as layers are torn and severed

Precisely the intent of this surgical beast

each claw’s razors edge

Meticulously slicing

through the deadened tissue

Revealing flesh tender and pink

(The Rotting, Scaly skin He keeps for Himself,

for what I can not think nor do I care, it’s His share)

Momentarily my lungs are filled

as exhausted coughs closely follow

One more, needed, deep breath

as I prepare for the ensuing (inevitable) strike

…Like the pause before an icy plunge
